About
I’m not involved in the industry and I don’t homebrew. For me, beer is just something I love talking about. I moved out of Texas to Denver with my wife after we got married, and my once low-level hobby got turned up to 11 when I saw the selection, and the breweries, and the passion this state has for great Craft Beer. I started with Porters and Stouts, but I have educated my palate to like even the hoppiest IPAs and whatever else this crazy and sometimes ridiculous industry can churn out.

russian river makes great beer but has what i would refer to as “grateful dead mystique” the dead played their very best songs infrequently and as such they took on a larger significance. Dark Star and St Stephen in particular were played only a handful of times in later years and when they did fans felt they had a religious expeirence…in hampton when the dead played dark star fans fainted and cried….or if ou are a phish fan maybe destiny unbound would be the analogy….if you are not a fan of either of these bands then skip to the next paragraph…not unlike the long lines for pliny the younger….a great beer but just a beer nonetheless….plenty of other good ones and not worth flying across the country and waiting in line for.
PBR to me is the easiest drinking and tastiest of the mass produced brews better than coors, bud or miller, and no i am not a fixie riding messenger bag carryng, skinny jean wearing hipster…..its also great in a funnel
stout month is fantastic but up here in boulder at least the sun franchise is becoming a victim of its own success….i walked down to mtn sun on 2.1.11 for day 1 of stout month and despite it being -7 degrees they had an hour wait on a tuesday night…i convinced the waiter to let me take home a growler of trickster stout, my favorite of mtn suns stouts and a rare one at that ……we went to southern sun on superbowl sunday (f*** football) since they have no tvs and did find a table easily….also got hammered on trickster addiction coffee stout which womeone on fb described as a hippie fourloko and the belgium dip love stout month but tonight so. sun had a 2 hour wait at 630 pm …..i like stouts and all but 2 hours….
not
so
much
backcountry pizza of nederland has opened in boulder and has about 35 beers on tap with a promised 50 eventually in the space that used to house dolans on 23rd and arapahoe. i ate there last saturday and had excellent pizza, and blind pig, pliny the elder and oskar blues gordon on tap…only problem, they only do 10 oz drafts of the stronger beers and hide behind something relating to the ABC laws which they say deny them the ability to serve a full pint of pliny the elder…..wow tell that to the west end tavern which will pour you a pint of pliny all day every day along with other “strong” beers. that may be a deal breaker for me and backcountry….we shall see
is it me or is russian river producing a lot more pliny the elder? west end has it a lot, and backcountry says it will be a permanent beer in their rotation……if they make too much they are risking that grateful dead mystique i referenced above. i think that happened with dogfishhead beers here in boulder over the past 10 years. whne they first hit they disapeared from liquor mart in minutes, now that its there all the time, i only buy it infrequently ….i also have hated many of their special releases lately.
enough nonsense, keep up the great writing i enjoyed your site a lot
